When You Need Permission to Do What YOU Really Want

What do YOU want to do? What do you need and how are you going to get it? All those pressures you’re feeling are outside expectations from society and what other people think. You need to learn how to say “Thank you for your feedback but that’s not really the direction I’m headed in right now.” You’re going to hear a thousand different opinions from everyone and all that matters is what you want to do. Here’s a lesson from my experience in the publishing industry: The authors that are successful are not the ones who are driving and pushing for a successful writing career. It’s the ones who are constantly writing. It’s not the ones who are constantly going on tour. It’s the ones who are writing six books at once and sometimes, sure, they go on tour. If you want to be a prolific songwriter then you just need to write. I didn’t know this about you. I didn’t know that being a prolific songwriter is what you wanted. You don’t need to listen to people then when they are telling you you need to be perfecting, performing, producing whatever. Do what you want. Write. The people that want that will follow you and they’ll be cool with whatever you’re sharing. Frankly, I don’t give a fuck what you do; photography, music, training unicorns whatever. Just do what you want to do. Write as many songs as you can and then choose the best one each month and publish that one. The cream of the crop will rise up and you’ll grow into the prolific songwriter you want to be. Writing is the way to get there. Cool?
