when you need to dream bigger, dream better

Space and time has us trapped by its laws and we have the option of moving through this reality in a spirit of expansion, aiming higher, growing ourselves ever larger until we are all encompassing and capable of entering into our dreamscape, ambulating through as humanoid giants above a galactic countryside. If we can dream it, we can somehow do it, apparently. Our dreams must exist out there somewhere. So it becomes a journey of discovering the path to that hidden pocket of the universe whence the dream called us. Think quantum Dr. Strange style shit… a dream could be a spot in the universe, sending it’s signal into our brain and then we are pulled to go find it and experience the imagined inside the present. Could we dream any bigger than this?

What are you dreaming? Quitting your job, running away to live in a pink VW van and watching sunsets on an exotic beach i your perfect body? Yes please. How about walking onto a big stage, spotlights shine in your face and the crowd cheers as you drop the sick beats. Yep. Those are pretty big dreams…how do we go even bigger? Should we go bigger? Is there bigger? I could colonize Antarctica or cure cancer or become a teenage mutant ninja turtle. But I don’t care about those dreams.Don’t go big for the sake of going big. It’s better to take what we love and explode it with dream steroids.

She Became the Ocean - Cha Wilde Paintings 2019 -5_WEB - wildeasfuck.jpg

I love to paint human size sunsets in my garage. → BIGGER → I will paint on larger canvases. → BIGGER → I will own my own art studio. → BIGGER → I will hang my paintings in a national museum. → BIGGER → I will sell my paintings at big art auctions. → BIGGER → I will paint artwork that is studied in universities. → BIGGER → I will inspire young girls to paint and be artists when they grow up. → BIGGER → I will lead artist retreats that fund a foundation or scholarship for girls’ art education. → BIGGER → I will be a spokesperson for the value of art and increase art funding in public schools. → BIGGER → I will retire my family with the money I earn from the paintings I sell. → BIGGER → My art will be elected as a representative of the human race when we send our cool shit out on the exploration rockets or whatever the fuck. → BIGGER → I will pick up a Guinness world record for painting an art collection under the ocean… I could go on forever with these ridiculously creative and yet somehow obtainable ideas.

As I make the list, my imagination is sparked. How fun to think outside of the box! But quickly, the game loses its appeal. Bigger doesn’t mean better. Most of those things I listed sound cool on paper but I seriously doubt if I would actually have the desire the follow through on the epic amounts of work required to paint under the ocean or the stomach to handle the highbrow critic-full art industry. It’s easy to dream so big up there in your head that you lose the pulse of your own heart, beating in your chest for the most simple of reasons, the most simple of dreams. I paint because it makes me happy. I love colors. I love being surprised by what comes out on the canvas and the joy of staring at the designs for hours after, the conversations that spark when people stand beside me and together we gaze on the art that came through me. It’s the same with the music I create. I love the music itself and I don’t care anymore where it goes or what it does with its life. Just as if the music were my children. I love them because I love them. It was pure pleasure and honor (and a fuck ton of hard work that made me feel even more committed to the loving of them) to give birth to them, raise them and send them off in the world. I don’t care what my kids do, I just want them to be happy. I don’t care what my art accomplishes, I just want it to be in the presence of happiness, being enjoyed by myself and by others. That can happen anywhere people know how to slow down and be.

The world is changed in the real life present moment. Only in our vague ass imagination do these dreams take up so much space that they actual convince us that our actions will wash over the world like a tidal wave that transforms everything. Not so. Even the pandemic pulses of politics and climate don’t rattle the steadiness of time and space and how they are still just right here and now, equanimous, unruffled by the waves of changing details crossing through the environment of human consciousness.

I drop acid and boom, I’m right here and now again. I look at my cat and she’s like “Hello, I’ve been waiting for you to chill the fuck out and join me here in the present moment again.” I meditate for ten minutes and squirm around uncomfortable and impatient and then around 15 minutes suddenly boom, I’m back in the present moment and my body, just like the cat, raises its eyebrows as if to say, “Took you long enough. Why do you keep leaving?” Whatever dreams materialize in this lifetime, you’re going to experience them in the present moment. You’re going to be standing on that big stage with the spotlights and you’re going to look down and see your piano, the same one that usually in your garage. You’re going to feel like you need to crack your back or you’ll be annoyed that your tongue is burned because you drank too-hot tea before you walked on stage. When you get to that dream moment, it’s going to be the real moment and if you know how to live in the present moment, then it will be magical…equally as magical as every other moment; no more and no less.

So we can dream and we can dream bigger just in the same way we can climb a mountain and get excited about which mountain we’ll climb next BUT the best and biggest dream of all is that we get to live fully along the way. Live in this present moment as you climb your mountain to your dream summits, take every step with loving care and you’ll build that mountain with love from the ground up. I want to stand on top of a mountain made of love, not a pile of shit and stress. When you dream your big dreams, pay attention to the little details of how you will live in that moment of reality.

I dream of performing at The Gorge Amphitheater (it’s my favorite dream and I visualize it as a reference for every song I create). How do I dream bigger here? I don’t need to dream of a stage that is bigger than the Gorge. That won’t make me happy. I want to play the Gorge. End of story. I dream BIGGER by dreaming better. Before I walk on stage, I have the most enriching meditation session overlooking the Gorge. I melt a piece of chocolate in my mouth and my senses light up and I feel so excited. I see all of my friends in the audience. I am on stage with people I LOVE playing music with. I feel confident to try out something new so I feel nervous and excited. I gave away some free tickets to girls who dream of being artists one day. I have my paintings on the stage behind me and on all the merch… oou my paintings could be printed on fabric and floating above the stage in the wind. That looks Gorgeous in my imagination. This is fun thinking this way. This is a much better use of my imagination than pushing myself to be in some national museum or breaking into that museum as a ninja turtle. Simply dreaming “big” might distract you because who decides what counts as “bigger” anyway? Dream better by dreaming bigger life into your dream. Stick with your original dream and fill that dream with bigger intention, bigger mindfulness, bigger heart, bigger love, so you can be more present in every moment on this journey start to finish. Bigger presence is the only thing that’s going to fulfill your hungry spirit, my love. LOVE ❤ CHA

when aliens are watching, represent humanity

If you want to explore your spirit wilderness you have to follow the signs you feel inside rather than the signs someone else stuck in the ground outside around you.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a teacher. I dreamed of being a ballerina, a marine biologist and a fashion designer. I thought about being a gynecologist and I talked about being a diplomat. I trained to be a spiritual leader. I became a photography business woman. I realized I’m an artist. I’ve always been a writer, a singer, a painter, a dancer, a photographer, a storyteller, a girl who likes to play outside and help other women and build deep spiritual community. It’s taken me thirty years to see this pathway that I’ve walked down. Nothing was linear or planned and yet everything is tied together. Since high school, I’ve had one clear intention. Do what feels most exciting. This approach ensures that I’m excited about whatever I’m doing every step of the way and that the destination will reveal itself naturally based on the stepping stones we trusted.

”Chamonix keeps changing jobs!” said one of my mom’s friends once. Up popped a bunch of self-doubt after hearing that. She was right. How could I build a steady growing career if I kept switching around. My mom was a champion for me and defended that everything I did was connected by common themes and every step built upon the previous one. Thanks mom. However you’re living, that’s how you’re doing it. There are over 7 billion different ways to live a human life. When you realize the freedom in this, you’re going to have so much fun sculpting the lifestyle that makes you feel most alive. We are not role models for each other copy. We are inspiration for each other to keep doing our own thing. I want to see you do your own thing because that gives me permission, confidence, excitement to do my own thing too.

She Became the Ocean - Cha Wilde Paintings 2019 -4_WEB copy.jpg

Imagine a high school friend group, a cliche in which every person is the same. Little clones of each other. It’s boring as fuck looking at them (apart from the gawking factor). Imagine the best friend TV shows of all time like Friends, The Big Bang Theory and New Girl…we freaking love watching friend groups that have extreme diversity. We love identifying with one character in particular and watching how drastically different personalities can be friends and live together. I’m not alone in day-dreaming of living a life like I’ve seen on these TV shows and I’ve gone out of my way to manifest it for myself. I currently live in a house with 5 adults and we’re crushin’ the diversity game and it feels wonderful. This is so attractive to use because we’re hardwired for community. We are tribal creatures who survive and thrive on a living in community with diversity. We need many people around us who specialize in different jobs and bring different energy to the table. I need my husband around for his big muscle protection and solid logical problem solving mind. I need bestie around for her mama-bear cuddle me, wipe my tears away and slap me in the ass to get shit done vibe. I need my gay best friend around for his constant uplifting mindful energy that keeps our house living positively, intentionally improving our spiritual and social connection. I need my brother for his chill don’t worry about it attitude and his mechanical skills for fixing everything. I could go on forever with these friend descriptions because they’re so fun and I recommend you do the same for your friends.

Make sure you’re a part of a diverse community and that you’re making life decisions that are exciting and fueling LIFE and not death. Your life is composed of days. How you spend your days is how you spend your life. Are you feeling excited to wake up in the morning? Do you feel deeply rooted in your spiritual practice? Do you even have one? Do you even know where to start? I can help you if you’re feeling lost here. Just message me. Do you feel alive in your creative projects and are you satisfied with your progress? Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror? Do you love how it feels when you walk into the doors of your home or work? Ask these questions about every detail of your life. Do you feel good when you open the refrigerator? How about your toothbrush? Do you enjoy brushing with it? Would you have more fun brushing your teeth if you had a different color toothbrush? Seriously. Comb through your life and up your game in every department so every moment has the potential to be enjoyed and more alive. Even if you’re sitting in the hospital waiting room waiting for terribly scary life changing results….can you sit up straighter so your body is more comfortable and not cramping? Can you eat your snack more slowly and savor the taste with gratitude? Can you put your earplugs in and listen to your favorite music or podcast instead of putting up with the less-than-awesome radio playing on the office speakers? Up your life, my love. You deserve this, like we all do.

Humans…we don’t get to choose to be born and to be here. We’re just fucking here. Everyday, still here. If you continue to choose to be here with us, let’s make it as fucking great as possible. Make it better for yourself and the light inside you is going to shine brighter for those around you and they’re going to have a better time too. And then when some aliens look down at our planet and see our human race they’ll see these beautiful bright shiny lights of souls having a good time loving and creating each other. We are legitimately a part of this universe and we can represent ourselves well to the rest of the galaxies. Like, seriously, let’s wave our human flag with pride and self respect and love. We have no idea who is watching and if someone’s watching then we have so much potential to shine bright and inspire them and show them how fucking beautiful humans are. When we are at our best, as a tribe we are beautiful and though I don’t support envy, I dare say we’re rather enviable for what we have as happy humans full of love and joy. Okay, enough for today. LOVE Cha

lightening strike in summer

I made a music video for my new song! It was Davey Browne's idea to use video game visuals after he heard me brainstorming how on earth I was going to haul my camera equipment up a mountain and film myself up there for my music video. It was my vision and Davey's solution was genius and I had sooooo much fun making one morning at Starbucks (instead of roughin' it National Geographic style lol). I saw people waiting for their coffee and peering over my shoulder, wondering what I was doing. Fun secrets. This project opened up a whole new world for me --- the beautiful art of video games. You can look forward to more of these video game music videos; can't stop me now. Enjoy!

when you're afraid to share your artwork because you feel like you're showing off

“I’m going to tell you something and I’m really serious about this because I really mean it. You think that you’re showing off when you post your drawings. You’re not showing off. You’re sharing. When I look at your drawings, I feel inspired, I get new ideas. I love looking at your drawings because they are unusual and thought-provoking and inspire me to be more creative with my own art. I love them and I want to see them all the time. It makes me sad when I don’t get to see your drawings because you’re holding them back. It’s frustrating. It would make me so happy to log in to Instagram every morning and see new drawings from you. That would add real value to my life. We are all creating and when we share, we inspire each other to create more and the inspiration keeps going around and around. You are NOT showing off. I want you to share. What you create has an impact on me.”

When You're Afraid Your Songs are Inappropriate

“YOU have to believe. You have to go in there like a bomb. If other people are going to believe in what you are doing, you have to believe it first. Do the thing that is different. Spice it up. They’re going to love it no matter what you sing. No one ever sings to me in yoga and I have gone to a lot of yoga classes. You think you have to fit in and give them what they expect. You think you have to sing relaxing “yoga appropriate” songs like Enya but NOOOOO! You need to show up and sing your songs. They’re going to be grateful that someone is singing at all and your songs are powerful. Give them something new to take in. Blow their minds. But you have to believe in what you’re doing. Stand up for your songs and show that they belong there. Make them believe by showing them that you believe.”

When You Need Permission to Do What YOU Really Want

What do YOU want to do? What do you need and how are you going to get it? All those pressures you’re feeling are outside expectations from society and what other people think. You need to learn how to say “Thank you for your feedback but that’s not really the direction I’m headed in right now.” You’re going to hear a thousand different opinions from everyone and all that matters is what you want to do. Here’s a lesson from my experience in the publishing industry: The authors that are successful are not the ones who are driving and pushing for a successful writing career. It’s the ones who are constantly writing. It’s not the ones who are constantly going on tour. It’s the ones who are writing six books at once and sometimes, sure, they go on tour. If you want to be a prolific songwriter then you just need to write. I didn’t know this about you. I didn’t know that being a prolific songwriter is what you wanted. You don’t need to listen to people then when they are telling you you need to be perfecting, performing, producing whatever. Do what you want. Write. The people that want that will follow you and they’ll be cool with whatever you’re sharing. Frankly, I don’t give a fuck what you do; photography, music, training unicorns whatever. Just do what you want to do. Write as many songs as you can and then choose the best one each month and publish that one. The cream of the crop will rise up and you’ll grow into the prolific songwriter you want to be. Writing is the way to get there. Cool?

When You're Holding Back, Afraid to Perform Wholeheartedly

"For someone who says they want to do this as their career, it bothers me to not see you trying your hardest. You need to practice how you perform or else you're building bad habits. If you never practice going for that high note, then you won't have the confidence you need to go for it once you're on stage. You need to practice performing when I'm in the room. You're afraid of disrupting me or being annoying or too loud but it's actually much more distracting and annoying when you singing a song badly in the corner, than if you give it your all. I like having music playing in the background, but not bad music. If you can only practice performing when you're alone then that's not really helping you practice perform in front of other people and it makes me feel like I'm getting in the way of you doing your work and pursuing your dreams. I feel bad, like I should leave the room so you can do what you need to do and I don't like it. Your reason for holding back is not rational and you need to let it go right now. Can you do that?"

How to Jam with Other Musicians

Intimidating!! Even my brother (who is a guitar ninja) says this about jam sessions. Pressure to perform and be genius and mush your vibes with someone else and it could all clash like hell. Gulp gulp. Here's what I do to get the ball rolling at my jam sessions these days:

Cha Wilde + Spence Hood Jammin' at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle

Cha Wilde + Spence Hood Jammin' at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle

THE WARM UP
I set up a casual hang out with a musician. We grab coffee, sit in the park or cheers whiskey in their living room. We talk for a while and then eventually pick up guitars and start mindlessly plucking on them.

AGENDA
I suggest that we each perform a song for the other so we can hear what we're working with, feel the vibes and warm up the juices. Then either one person plays a song they know and the other person harmonizes or jumps in when inspired OR someone just starts playing around with a chord progression.

HUNTING
Naturally, someone will start playing a rhythm or chord progression this is catchy and whoever it is, doesn't matter. It's like hunting; we're both searching through the forest and whoever spots something first zeros in and squeezes the other person on the shoulder to say, "hey look at this."

PLAYING PASS
Once one person has a steady beat going, the other can start to chime in with a pluck or a strum or a fun lyric. Usually, we're kinda shy and we mumble and fumble around until something more solid forms and we build confidence and start singing louder and louder. And then it will switch. The chimer-inner will find a natural pause in the music and sing or play louder or take everything in a new direction and now they're the leader. I love taking my jam buddy's lyrics or chord and tweaking it slightly. This makes it possible for us to build something together. They feel good because I liked their idea enough to use it. I put my own spin on it to see what else is possible and to inspire them to take it back and fuck it up again! Back and forth until it feels really groovy.

JAMMIN'
At some point, suddenly we're flowing. It's weird because I'll realize we're playing a song. It sounds beautiful. The lyrics work. Are we really just coming up with this on the spot? I start thinking and celebrating too much and get distracted and the song flops. I dropped the ball. We go quiet and talk about music goals, social media and touring. We tell some silly stories and watch someone play catch with their dog and one of us will say "Wanna hear a song I'm working on? Maybe you could help me with the lyrics?" and then we do that for a while.

YOU GOT THIS!
Jammin' used to be too scary. I didn't have anything to bring to the table. Now I want to jam everyday because I'm seeing results -- cooler ideas than I could have come up with on my own, friends helping me move roadblocks in the songs I'm writing, a beautiful harmony and sound creation that only happens with two live guitars or voices together (way better than playing alone in my bedroom -- way way better)! If you're one step behind me and feeling nervous to jam, my best advice is the only advice (and the suckiest) you just gotta fucking do it. Be embarrassed and awkward for a while. Own it. Be open about it. Tell musicians you're learning how to jam and you need guidance. That's what I did and now I can't wait till my next jam session (it's in 12 hours hehe). I'm just a little tadpole in this music pond and I'm already bubbling up with confidence after just a few jam sessions. You got this!

Setting Goals that Sounds Super Dope

If I own a sailboat, then I'm going to be super stressed because I'll be responsible for a boat and probably a lot of other things. Well, that's one depressing way to think about it.

Yellow notepad in my lap, Spence Hood sitting across from me looking suave, daydreams freaking out in my imagination, chewing ice cubes, and Lake Washington sunshine. Here we are writing our 10, 5 and 1 year goals? Gulp.

I spent an hour thinking about everything that could go wrong.
How much work is that goal really going to take?
I don't want to doom myself to a workaholic lifestyle just to win a gold statue.
How much stress and responsibility is that goal going to put on my shoulders?
I don't want to buy a sailboat only to feel fucking stressed about it sinking or breaking.
What if I set goals and then feel like I HAVE to achieve them?
I want to surprise myself in this life; changing and going with the flow, not trapped or held accountable to something I said years ago with everyone watching. #freespirit

2018-08-07 10.47.16 1.jpg

These worries made goal setting almost impossible. I'd think of something cool in theory and then immediately rule it out as undesirable in reality. I used to be ashamed to set lofty goals, afraid of being judged as foolish or overly ambitious. Saying "I want to be a rockstar," was terrifying so I didn't say it. That sucked -- never hide.

So fuck it.
Push fear and worry aside. I'll figure out logistics later (like how I'm going to find free employees who will take care of my sailboat for me). For now, I'm only asking: What sounds really fun?

When You're Lost Inside the Stress

"Talk yourself on a walk outside for 5 minutes. Have a conversation with yourself like you were talking to another person. You're the only person who can help you. I know it sounds weird but seriously talk yourself through an entire conversation like this, "Hey, How's your day going?...(answer)..."What's stressing you out so much?...(answer)....What can I do to help you?...What are you going to do about it?...What's the best idea you've had so far?....Why is it worth doing this?...etc..." Ask clear questions and give yourself clear answers. You know what to do. You're vision is cloudy because your nervous system is overwhelmed. Help yourself out by giving your body a physical break; change of scenery, fresh air, movement, rub your own hand soothingly. Give your mental and emotional self the support you need. There's a part of you that is clear and strong and it can come out if you give it space to show up. You got this."

Jam Sessions Used to Be Intimidating

How do you feel about whiskey? Valerie (one of half of the fabulous La Fonda) presented us with mixed drinks and salmon pate. We obsessed over the dope artwork on her walls and one by one out came the guitars until we were sitting a circle of instruments, Instagraming each other and making that "fuck yah" facial expression while we experimented with new lyrics.

WHAT WENT ON IN MY MIND WHILE JAMMING
My voice sounds so good in this room! Is my guitar strumming normally this funky? Are these guys seriously just sitting in silence watching me play...by choice? Am I actually jamming with other musicians and real music is pouring out of our instruments? Ouu that chord sounded nice. I love it when her voice hits that note! Soo good! Are other professional musicians actually telling me they want to sing with me? Are they sick of listening to this song yet? Should I end the song early or keep singing? What the fuck is happening? Is he actually asking for my opinion on this guitar? HummmmmmHummmmmLaalalaaaaaa Do I actually sound like Shakira?

WHEN DID I BECOME GOOD?
For so long, I've been playing alone in my bedroom trying to convince my fingers to make pretty sounds and trying to convince my mind to stop worrying about AM I GOOD ENOUGH TO DO THIS and trying to convince my lonely heart to KEEP PLAYING MUSIC when I desperately want to go play with my friends. I've been telling myself that if I just keep going, I will get somewhere. If I never stop practicing then eventually I have to become good? Right? Logic. I've worried that I'm a delusional dreamer.

But now like a bat out of hell swooping in behind me, change is here. I'm performing on a rooftop. I'm in a jam session. Fans are recognizing me in crowds at festivals. I'm being interviewed for magazines. I write songs in my sleep. What the actual fuck? I still feel like I suck most of the time; so far away from how good I want and need to be, lost and confused on the direction I'm heading in, which steps to take next. I had a dream once where John Mayer and I were hanging out in the kitchen and I asked him "What do I need to do to make this music dream of mine come true?" He repeated his answer again and again: JUST KEEP PLAYING.

SIDE NOTE: The same thing happened when I decided to lose weight three years ago. I started running 10 minutes a day, each NO sugar, squatting 10 times every time I went to the bathroom and that's it. Over time I increased intensities and changed diets but that basic foundation is still there. Just keep moving. Just stop eating poison. Three years later I look in the mirror and I'm like "What the fuck? When did I become a super model? I'm just the beautiful chubby girl. How did this happen all of a sudden?" Like weight loss and enlightenment, training yourself to become a musician is gradual until it's sudden. SLOW STEADY STUBBORN PRACTICE leads to SOLID LIFE CHANGING PROGRESS AND TRANSFORMATION.

LA FONDA: Two badass sisters lead a band of boys. They create funky dreamy indie pop songs, full of color and warm vibes. I first hugged Valerie & Veronica in their practice room in the Old Rainier Brewery in Seattle; the wallpaper was their lyrics, colorful twinkly lights and superheros hung from the ceiling. They immediately taught me how women in the music industry can welcome each other in, build each other up and stand beside each other strong. lafondamusic.com  @lafondamusic

How can we not be out in that? It's fucking incredible. Did you say boat? Holy shit could life be more amazing? And look at you! You look fucking fantastic; so tan and muscular and your hair, my god. Remember that time you did shrooms and you spent the entire day in awe of how fucking amazing you are and how much everyone loves you? Pretty crazy right? Yah, that's a real thing. You're so fucking amazing you don't even know what to do with yourself. I'm actually in awe right now. I mean I'm mind-blowing amazing too so it's totally not surprising that we're together right now. Like attracts like, ya know? ;P And this coffee we're about to order is going to blow your fucking mind. Can you believe coffee this delicious is being brewed just 5 minutes from your house on the daily! On. The. Daily. Adderall? What adderall? Oh that drug thing? Who the fuck needs that shit? We certainly don't. I mean it's nice and all but this coffee and that sunshine and your face and have you eaten watermelon recently? God damn it we're amazingly good looking. Stop it, your face is literally hurting my eyes its so attractive. Come on, get that fine ass off that couch; we got heads to turn and tail to chase and moons to shoot.
